libro (pencil) - libros

pluma (pen)  -plumas

chico (boy) - chicos

seُñora (Mrs)- señoras


Note: The definite articles "el", "la" also change in the plural form. They become “los” and “las”.


el libro - los libros

la pluma-  las plumas

el chico - los chicos

la seُñora- las señoras


Note: If a noun ends in a consonant, make it plural by adding "-es".

Singular Plural

el borrador (the eraser) -los borradores

la universidad (the university)- las universidades

el profesor (the teacher) -los profesores

la ciudad (the city) -las ciudades

el color (the color ) -los colores


 If a noun ends in "-ión", add "-es" and "drop the written accent".

Singular Plural

el avión (the plane) - los aviones

la conversación (the conversation)-  las conversaciones

la sección (the section)-  las secciones

la televisión (the TV) - las televisiones

la acción (the action)- las acciones


Tip: “avión” isn’t feminine.

Note: If a noun ends in "-z", add "-es" and change the "z to c".

la voz (the voice) - las voces

la actriz (the actress) - las actrices

la luz (the light) - las luces


Note: When the plural refers to two or more nouns of different genders, the masculine plural is used.

2 gatos + 3 gatas = 5 gatos  (cats)
3 alumnos+ 5 alumnas = 8 alumnos  (students)

Note: A few nouns are “compound nouns”, they are formed by combining two words into one.

(Example: abre + latas = abrelatas / open + cans = can opener)

These compound nouns are always masculine, and the plural is formed by changing the “el” to “los”

el abrelatas      los abrelatas   (can opener)
el paraguas      los paraguas   (umbrella)
